What is a Child Protection Enquiry? (Section 47)
If we think your child or children (or a child you look after) might be at risk of harm, but are not in immediate danger, we will look into it a bit more to find out what’s going on. This is called a Child Protection Enquiry, and it comes from Section 47 of the Children’s Act 1989.
During this time, a Social Worker will want to meet your child (if they can talk) to understand what life is like for them, what matters to you and your child, and any changes you want to make. They will also speak to you and other people who know your child well. This helps us gather the information needed to decide if your child is at serious risk of harm.
What can happen after the enquiry?
- We might decide no more action is needed because your child is safe. We may offer help through our Early Help services to support your family.
- We could carry out more assessments to find ways to support you and your child.
- If we find that your child is at serious risk of harm, we will set up a Child Protection Conference (called the Initial Child Protection Conference) within 15 days.
- If your child is in immediate danger, we will follow special steps to keep them safe straight away.
Whatever the outcome, we will talk this through with you and work together on the next steps.
